The Affordable Care Act does not require 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:Health Insurance Marketplace plans to cover infertility services. As a result, coverage is limited in many states. Investopedia analyzed plans in Illinois, where infertility is an essential health benefit required for marketplace plans. Only a handful of other states have such comprehensive infertility coverage requirements for marketplace plans, so you may find more limited results when shopping for plans in your state.

Best for Low Costs : Ambetter

Ambetter

Ambetter

  • Average individual monthly premium (silver plan): $441
  • Average individual annual deductible (silver plan): $4,556
  • Customer complaints: Many more than expected
Why We Chose It

Ambetter’s marketplace plans are some of the most affordable among the companies Investopedia reviewed. Its Clear Silver plan covers all your costs for in-network infertility care after you meet its $6,500 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:deductible. Most other companies charge you a portion of the costs after you meet your deductible (“澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:coinsurance”).

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Covers inferti▨lity services at no cost after deductible

  • Low out-of-꧟pocket maximum compared to other marketplace policies

Cons
  • Pre-authorization is required for fertility drugs

  • Frequent customer complaints

Overview

Ambetter has some of the most affordable marketplace plans based on average premiums, deductibles, and copays. Its average maximum out-of-pocket limits for individuals ($7,141) and families ($13,556) are the lowest among the companies Inv꧅estopedia reviewed. The insurer’s Clear Silver plan has no coinsurance or copay for in-network infertilit꧂y services after you meet your deductible.

However, Ambetter doesn’t have the best drug prꩵices. In Illinois, Ambetter covers fertility drugs such as gonadotropin as tier 4 specialty drugs. So, you’ll have to ask Ambetter if it’ll cover the drug, and if it does, your prescription will likely be expensive. Ambetter’s marketplace plans charge almost a 50% copay on average nationwide for tier 4 drugs.

Ambetter also receives many more customer complaints than expected for its size. Its three-year average National Association of Insurance Com🅺missioners (NAIC) Complaint Index was 2.31. A company that receives the expected number of complaints will receive an index of 1, and Ambetter’s index is well above that.

In general, Ambetter only covers invitro fertilization (IVF) after you’ve trie♉d🐭 cheaper fertility options.

Ambetter was founded in 2014,🐼 and its parent company, Centene, is based in St. Louis. It offers marketplace plans in 29 states.

Best for Drug Coverage : Aetna

Aetna

 Aetna

  • Average individual monthly premium (silver plan): $501
  • Average individual annual deductible (silver plan): $5,107
  • Customer complaints: Much fewer than expected
Why We Chose It

Aetna has low copays for pharmacies and covers infertility drugs like chorionic gonadotropin as a preferred specialty drug. Many competitors don’t cover the drugs at all or they cover them at a higher, more expensive tier. Aetna aꦫlso has a National Infertility Unit staffed by experts who help members manage and understand their fertility benefits.

Aetna won’t offer Obamacare plans on the marketplace in 2026. Its parent company, CVS Health, said exiting the marketplace would help “focus the Company’s portfolio” on other services. If you get your health insurance through Aetna’s exchange plans, you’ll need to find a new plan for 2026. Aetna will continue to provide service to members until the end of 2025.

Pros & Cons
Pros
  • Low copays for doctor visits and pharmacies

  • N🍃atiܫonal Infertility Unit for coordinating infertility care

  • Few customer complaints

Cons
  • Relatively high premiums and deductibles for mar🅺ketplace plans

Overview

In Investopedia's nationwide review of health insurance companies, Aetna had some of the lowest copays for doctors and pharmacies. Fertility treatments often require large quantities of high-cost medications to succeed, including the commonly used drug gonadotropin.

Of the seven insurers offering infertility coverage on the Illinois marketplace, Aetna was one of𝓡 only three to cover gonadotropin. Aetna and Cigna each cover it in their second-most expensive drug cost tier, while Ambetter covers it at its most expensive.

Note

A typical dose of gonadotropin can cost anywhere from around $280 to more than $550 without insurance, depending on your pharmacy.

While Aetna an🌄d Cigna offered similar coverage in Illinois, we felt Aetna had better drug coverage because it had slightly lower drug copays nationally, especially for family plans.

Doctor visits are also frequent during IVF treatment. Aetna’s Silver S plan covers most in-network fertility care at a flat copay of $80. Most other in🦩surers charge a coinsurance based on a percentage of the cost🐟 of care, making it harder to plan your spending.

Aetna received far fewer complaints than expected for its size over the past three years, which also helped land it on our list of the 澳洲幸运5开奖号码历史查询:best health insurance companies. Members get ꧂perks like $0 CVS MinuteClinic visits and 20% off CVS 🐭Health-brand wellness products.

However, in our study, Aetna’s average premiums and deductibles for individual plans are on the higher end. Like Ambetter, Aetna only covers more advanced treatments like IVF after you’ve tried less invasive and cheaper treatments like artificial insemination.꧑

Aetna was founded in 1853 and is based in Hartford, Connecticut. It offers 🍰marketplace plans in 17 states.
